Bel Canto Choir is an amateur mixed-voice choir of 30 members based in Mexborough,South Yorkshire. The choir was formed over 25 years ago by Barbara Senior (Trinity College London, Examiner) and reunited many of her former pupils and colleagues at Wath Grammar School, many of whom continue to sing together today.

Always welcoming new members, Bel Canto has been augmented over the years by many gifted and talented musicians from around the UK including local amateur and professional singers alike.

The choir’s repertoire extends from baroque to contemporary and has included premieres of new works by local composers, including ‘This Little Babe’ (Godward, 2011) and the South Yorkshire Premiere of ‘The Manchester Carols’ (Sasha Johnson Manning, 2012). Other noted projects have included Carmina Burana (Orff), a re-creation of the first performance of ‘Messiah’ (Handel) using full continuo and period instruments and a performance of the ‘Petite Messe Solennellle’ (Rossini) with piano and harmonium.

Bel Canto has also appeared at weddings, festivals and special events around the region, and by invitation on Radio Sheffield and at Sheffield Cathedral.

Under the musical direction of David Barnard, Bel Canto extended its musical network to work with a range of professional singers, musicians and tutors including Sarah Fox, Deborah Norman, Roland Wood, Christopher Lemmings, Neil Taylor, and Malcolm Martineau.

Future engagements include ‘Bel Canto Encore!’ for the Sheffield Music Club subscription series in November 2013, and the choir is delighted to have been invited to perform with Lesley Garrett CBE, and Dore Male Voice Choir at Sheffield City Hall in March 2014.
